Measurement is the key to both science and technology. A means of measuring MammaCare breast examination proficiency was critical to both the basic research and the early versions of the technology. Measurement allows us to determine  the proficiency of manual breast examination in a numerical fashion that provides a direct, simple, and precise index of the skill. Using such measures, we can objectively determine which training procedures are superior and which patients are in need of further instruction.

The MammaCare Proficiency Evaluation Lamp* permits the examiner to assess the adequacy of breast tissue coverage. The lamp is a slim, lightweight projector mounted on a stable, adjustable pole.

The lamp has a unique, single slide projector that projects a soft beam with a clear numbered grid on the patient's upper torso. As the patient or clinician examines each  square of the grid, the observer records tissue coverage on the score sheet. A count of the squares examined divided by the number of squares that should have been examined gives an index of thoroughness of the examination.
